Driving Abroad

Advice When Driving In Another Country

When you are driving abroad, outside of the UK, it is important that you are protected while you are driving. Unfortunately you can lose thousands of pounds if you are not totally informed on the type of insurance cover you are going to need when you are driving in another country. Before you begin driving outside of the UK, you need to read the rest of this guide on driving abroad to be sure you are prepared and sufficiently covered.

There are many drivers who think that they automatically have coverage when driving abroad. Usually they only actually have coverage for basic Road Traffic Accident insurance. Depending on what country you are travelling in, you may only have third party cover, if that. This means that you are not covered if your car gets stolen in anther country or if you end up in the middle of various legal matters after having an accident.

Historically, British drivers have always needed a green car, which is a special certificate, providing that they have insurance overseas. Some of the countries in the European Union have since agreed that the tourists in the country did not need this green card when travelling; however, not all countries have applied this idea.

One example of this is Romania. In this country, your car can actually be impounded if you do not have your green card. You must also have your green card if travelling in Andorra, Poland, and Malta. While you theoretically do not need a green card in either Italy or France, you may even experience difficulties in some places that are off the beaten track in these countries as well.

If you need to get a green card, it is totally free for you to get. The card shows that you have at least some type of insurance cover on the car you are driving abroad. However, unless you extend your cover while abroad, travellers only have RTA insurance. There are some companies that charge for the green card and offer green card cover. What this actually is is an extension of your normal cover while you are in a different country. You usually have to pay extra for this type of cover.

Depending on how long you need to cover abroad, the rates for it will vary quite a bit. Some companies will also consider what type of car you will be driving and various other factors that may have an impact on the risk. There are also hybrid packages offered by some companies that have breakdown cover across Europe as well.

If you plan on travelling abroad in your own car, more than likely you will want to go ahead and extend your comprehensive cover. However, you should be sure to do this in advance to be sure that you have the documentation you need before you start to travel. You never want to be abroad without the proper type of insurance cover. This can lead to a great loss of money on your part, since you may not have the cover that you need.

While it will cost a bit to get the extended cover when you travel abroad, it will definitely be worth it, especially if you are involved in a motor vehicle accident in a different country. Of course it is always important that you plan ahead. So, before you travel, be sure that your insurance is all in order so you are not stuck without cover in a strange country.
